AFC Cup 2013: Kuwait SC prove too strong for East Bengal

AFC Cup 2013 Semi Finals-2nd Leg
Venue: Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata
22.10.2013
Kingfisher East Bengal 0-3 Kuwait SC
KSC: Rogerinho Coutinho(43rd), Abdulhadi Khamis(44th), Fawad Awad(88th)

Kuwait SC marched to the finals of AFC Cup 2013 after convincingly defeating Kingfisher East Bengal 3-0(7-2 on aggregate) at the Yuba Bharati Kridangan(Salt Lake Stadium), Kolkata on Tuesday, 22nd October 2013. Backed by a huge crowd, and the whole of India cheering for the Red and Golds, East Bengal were up against the defending champions Kuwait SC to do the unthinkable but it did not work out. East Bengal were made to pay for their mistakes in the first half as Kuwait SC made most of their chances gifted to them from defensive howlers. The first goal was scored when Brazilian playmaker Rogerio Coutinho went past several East Bengal defenders unchallenged and calmly slotted past East Bengal custodian Abhijit Mondal, who had a very rough outing. The goalkeeper was responsible for the second goal as he was caught off-guard when he came off his line only to find himself in no-mans-land as Kuwait SC forward Abdulhadi Khamis had an open net to score. The goal scorer Khamis was in the center of action but this time for all wrong reasons as he was given a straight red card for a off the ball challenge on Uga Okpara. Anyways, that did not happen to be the turning point as despite East Bengal's possession, the Red and Golds failed to create any chance from inside the box and thus were restricted to few long shots from outside the box. East Bengal also went down to 10 men as Arnab Mondal failed to cope up with the pace of Rogerinho Coutinho, and pulled him back to get a deserving red card. The Brazilian Coutinho, was in the center of attraction for most of the game making some great moves and skipping past East Bengal defense at ease. Fahad Awad put the final nail in the coffin as the Red and Golds witnessed a great goal when the Kuwait SC player flicked the ball twice from left to right and his small chip found the net as Abhishek Das could not keep the ball out from goal line.

East Bengal could take out positives the fruitful AFC Cup experience and it could help them in the i-League massively. East Bengal's major disappointment was in the form of Nigerian Chidi Edeh and goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal, both of whom did not have a great time against Kuwait SC. Lalrindika Ralte was undoubtedly East Bengal's best player on the pitch and we can only hope that Wim Koevermans make a note of him and includes him in the Indian line-up for the upcoming friendlies. Meanwhile Mehtab Hossain, Cavin Lobo and Shamik Dey also looked had a good game.
