Gurpreet Singh Sandhu became the first Indian to play in a competitive match for a top tier European club on Wednesday when he featured in the starting lineup for Stabaek FC in their cup tie against Runar in the Norwegian Cup.

Indian International, Gurpreet, has featured for the club's reserve squad but never featured for the senior squad under Bob Bradley, the Manager. It is to be noted that no other Indian player has featured in the senior squad of a top tier European club in a competitive match, with both Bhaichung Bhutia and Anupam Sarkar featuring for lower tier clubs while Mohammed Salim had featured for Celtic in a friendly game. Sunil Chhetri has featured for non-European club, Major League Soccer(MLS) squad Sporting Kansas City(then known as Kansas City Wizards) in a cup tie.

Gurpreet Singh's debut for senior squad went well as he kept a clean sheet quite comfortably with his team, Stabaek FC swept aside Runar 6-0 in the cup tie.
